5 out of 5 stars Very easy and fun to use   October 22, 2009

This is a 9-disk set.

The first two disks are focused on words. You get a variety of categories of words to learn. First words, foods, nations, etc. An onscreen man and a woman take turns pronouncing the words, and you can click to repeat as much as you wish. You practice speaking after them. Then there is a practice session for speech; you can record your speech so you can compare your pronunciation to the one given.

A couple of issues: The buttons are not labeled in the first part of the series, so you have to guess your way around but it isn't hard. Also, the help function offers only the most vague instructions; I cared less about how many points I could get in a game and cared more about knowing in advance how to play so I didn't lose points trying to figure it out. It's easy enough to catch on, but if you don't know you have to identify an object out of a group of objects *after* the flash cards are turned face down and you no longer know where the object is, you'll of course lose points. But it is a lot of fun, especially since the fun is rewarded with the knowledge that you're learning to speak a language not your own. Plus the games help with repetition of vocabulary and pronunciation.

Then you have part two, which likewise consists of two disks, and these focus on phrases and sentences. There are flash cards involved, with a quiz after. And you get to cover important topics, including medical emergencies. The second disk in part two has dialogues and of course the quiz after, but I felt the speaking was very fast for people who are just learning. And you have to click for each phrase, but it gives you more control over your pace.

Level 3 disk 1 has games entirely in Spanish based on previous lessons. Fun. Know your vocab-those questions test for you knowledge of both numbers and quantifying details. Level 3 disk 2 has phrases and dialogues, mostly related to business. (This license is for home use only, however, so it's not to take to work to train your employees, but you can bolster your own business savvy with this second language at home. Other license types available, though.)

Disk 7 has mp3/iPod audio, and disk 8 has a mystery game called "Who is Oscar Lake?" Disk 9 is a language learning interactive game DVD.

There is plenty of variety here to keep you from getting bored, and the immersion style is how you would naturally learn language anyhow.

Help languages supported: German, Mexican Spanish, Italian and French.

I'm having lots of fun. If dry textbooks aren't your thing, this will get you up and running quickly.

Now how about some disks in Hungarian and Russian?

5 out of 5 stars Very Intuitive and Visual ...   October 22, 2009
Bobbie - "Andromeda's Gramma" (United States)

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R36CATT65DBGOO All of us have different ways that we learn, however the most common means of learning is visual. By coordinating what we see and what we hear, we learn "twice." I had been working with Learn to Speak Spanish Deluxe to relearn Spanish, but it is based more on auditory than on visual learning, so I was grateful for the opportunity to try this particular program. Now that I have this program, I highly recommend it!

It begins with the most basic words and concepts, and is very intuitive. You don't need directions, you simply begin. It is a complete "learn as you go" process. As you will see on the video, in the colors, you click on a color, you hear it said, and both the English and Spanish words are printed in front of you. The games reinforce what you have just learned. In fact, if you go through each lesson, it is impossible to keep from learning.

The style of learning follows the Montessori pattern - which allows you to learn by exploration rather than by following a rote formula. You choose the lesson you want to look at and can choose which order to do the practices. If one part bores you, the others compensate. This can be disconcerting if you are someone who likes structure, but it is a very natural method of learning.

I have walked through several lessons and found them easy to use. Because of time constraints, the video shows only the very beginning and the advanced lessons. However, the lessons between these take you carefully step by step until you reach the upper level.

Since I know some Spanish (I originally learned it in Spain as a child) I was worried that I thought the early lessons were easy because of that. So, I put my husband (who knows no Spanish and is somewhat timid around computer programs) in front of the computer and suggested he start. Within just a few minutes he was scoring well on the easy game. So, I give it high marks in ease of use and ease of learning.

I have run the software on XP, Vista, and Mac (which is what I was using on the Video). It ran smoothly on all platforms. If you wish to take advantage of the audio practice you will need to be able to handle MP3 files, and to play the DVD game, your computer will need a DVD drive.

My only criticism is that you have to run the software off of the disks. It did run well, but I am used to loading software directly onto my computer and I prefer not to have to carry software with me in order to use it on my laptop. However, given the combination of the price and the ease of learning, it feels like I'm whining to complain about it. This software is a great value and I recommend it for even someone who has never had any Spanish at all.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good as a Refresher Course   October 28, 2009

I had Spanish in high school and I'd lived in Spain for a year and Venezuela on and for three or four, so even though my Spanish was okay, I'd forgotten a lot, because I just haven't used it other than to say hello or goodbye to friend. So I was eager to try this course out.

It started very simply and I found my Spanish coming back, what I had of it anyway. I blazed through the first two levels (four DVDs) and am now going a bit slower on the third. When I finish I'm going to go over it all again, then try reading my husbands stash of Spanish comic books. This may have been meant for the absolute beginner, but it's a very good refresher course and one I'd highly recommend if, like me, you want to get back up to speed on a wonderful language that you haven't used in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Devon is Learning Spanish   December 13, 2009

I got this software for my seven-year-old son Devon, because it seemed like it would be fun. And it is. I wouldn't say he's champing at the bit to put away Halo 3 to play the games on this CD, but he doesn't whine about it. For every hour he spends on Halo, he has to spend thirty minutes with this. He's great at Halo, but he's learning Spanish, too. The mere fact that he doesn't cringe when he has to use this program is a pretty good recommendation for this program.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Good Deal for the Money   December 13, 2009

I have and I use and I like Rosetta Stone a whole heck of a lot. I got this as a review copy and I have to say it was a pleasant surprise. Though you're not immersed in the language like you are with Rosetta Stone and though there are a lot more exercise and real life type experience with Rosetta Stone, this costs a mere fraction of the price.

This little program is a very good place to start learning Spanish. In fact I wonder how many people have shelled out a small fortune for Rosetta Stone, only to stop using it after a few months. My advice, get this first, if you work through it and still want to go on, then get Rosetta Stone. This program is a very good deal for the money.
